Shep is raising money to help get him a service Diabetic Alert Dog. Shortly after his 4th birthday, Shep was admitted into the hospital and diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks the pancreas until it stops creating its own insulin, a hormone needed to survive. There is no cure and no treatment, only insulin and devices that help these brave kids stay alive.

Unlike the commonly known Type 2 diabetes, kids and adults with Type 1 diabetes are dependent on insulin to survive the rest of their lives.
Along with injecting their own insulin, comes extreme low blood sugars that can be life threatening and extreme high blood sugars that lead to long term complications.

While technology and continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) make life easier to manage with T1D, they are not as accurate as expected. They have been the cause of some dangerous lows Shep has experienced since diagnosis.

Diabetic Alert Dogs are trained to smell their specific human’s chemicals released when the body’s blood sugar drops too low and too high. Diabetic alert dogs can catch dangerous blood sugars up to 20 minutes before a CGM can.

What SHEP doesn’t know yet, is that there is already a dog reserved for him! 🥹 With this extensive training and quality of dog, comes a price of about $10,000.

Shep LOVES baseball. He wants to be a baseball player when he grows up.  His goal is to raise money for his dog with a “baseball shirt” he helped design to raise awareness for Type 1 Diabetes. He’s determined to live as normal of a childhood as he can, which having a little alert buddy will help him do.
